Red Lion, Bakewell

Project Overview

Client: Punch Taverns
Location: Bakewell, Derbyshire
Project Type: Traditional pub refurbishment
Scope: Interior design and refurbishment

Challenge/Brief

The Red Lion, situated in the historic market town of Bakewell—home of the famous pudding—required a sensitive refurbishment approach. The primary challenge was to modernise and refresh the venue whilst preserving its authentic character. The client’s vision was clear: the refurbished pub should appear as though it had always been there, developing organically over time rather than becoming an over-designed pastiche of a traditional English pub.

Solution

MGI’s approach centred on authenticity through restraint. Rather than imposing dramatic changes, the design strategy focused on subtle enhancements that would complement the pub’s existing charms. The solution involved careful selection of traditional colour palettes and close collaboration with the client throughout the design process, ensuring every finish and fixture aligned with the venue’s heritage character.

Implementation

The project emphasised collaborative decision-making, with MGI working closely with the client to select appropriate finishes and fixtures. Traditional colours were carefully chosen to enhance rather than overwhelm the space, whilst subtle design details were incorporated to refresh the interior without compromising its authentic appeal.

Results

The refurbishment successfully achieved the client’s vision of an organically evolved traditional pub interior. The subtle approach preserved the Red Lion’s inherent character whilst delivering a refreshed environment that maintains the venue’s authentic charm and connection to Bakewell’s heritage.
