The Fox

Holgate

This grade 2 listed building is York`s best example of a purpose built Victorian public house, originally built to serve the workers from the railway yards behind. Due to the nature of its listing MGI were required to work closely with the conservation officer in order to ensure we received listed building consent for the proposed works.

The internal layout of the site had to remain as existing with rooms off to either side of a long central corridor and historic elements of the pub that showed the sites progression over the years had to be retained, not least of which was a bar servery constructed in the 1980`s. whilst ordinarily such a bar would not be considered for retention the conservation officer`s view was that it showed the pub`s evolution over the years. From a design point of view this was problematic as it was in a poor condition and not of the quality that MGI hoped to introduce to the site. With that in mind we cleverly designed a new bar cladding in front of the existing with small access hatches that could be opened to allow people to view the “original “bar if they so wished.

Throughout the site MGI utilised traditional Victorian tiled and timber parquet flooring in deference to era in which the pub was built. Inspiration was drawn from both the Pubs name and its proximity to the railway yards with the use of bespoke handmade fox motif-stained glass screens and luggage racks with further nods through choices of wallpapers, signage and bric a brac. Existing listed fixed seating was reupholstered in deep buttoned leather and a mix of traditional Victorian pub furniture utilised throughout the site to reinforce the traditional nature of the pub resulting in a finished project that will stand the test of time for years to come.
