Challenge
The site, previously known as The Swan, had suffered years of neglect and required comprehensive refurbishment to appeal to Wilmslow’s affluent residents. The client needed to create an inviting, high-end establishment with an exceptional external dining area that would establish the venue as a premier destination. Key challenges included transforming underutilised interior spaces, improving natural light penetration to the rear areas, and creating a cohesive design vision that would differentiate the venue in a competitive market.
Solution
MGI developed a literary-themed concept that led to the venue’s rebranding as Anthology. The design strategy focused on creating distinct “stories” throughout different zones of the pub—snug, dining, drinking, and exterior areas—each designed to appeal to various customer preferences. This narrative approach provided a unifying theme whilst allowing each space to maintain its own character and function.
Implementation
The refurbishment involved several key interventions to maximise the site’s potential. Bespoke furniture and lighting were designed to reinforce the literary theme throughout the venue. The previously underutilised rear area was transformed with booth and mid-height banquette seating positioned opposite a large pass, creating kitchen theatre that allows customers to watch chefs at work.
New glazed bi-fold doors were installed to provide seamless access to the beer garden whilst flooding the previously dark rear areas with natural light. The exterior space received comprehensive enhancement including additional booth seating under a dedicated pergola structure, mixed paving and astroturf surfaces, and a central feature fire pit that doubles as a BBQ facility for warmer months.
Results
Following completion, Anthology established itself as one of Wilmslow’s premier hospitality destinations. The venue successfully attracted its target affluent demographic and became a recognised community hub. The design’s success in creating distinct yet cohesive spaces maximised revenue opportunities across different customer segments and dining occasions, whilst the enhanced beer garden significantly extended the venue’s seasonal appeal and capacity.
