Project Overview
Client: Hydes Brewery
Location: Northern Quarter, Manchester City Centre
Project Type: Pub and boutique hotel refurbishment
Scale: Complete interior redesign of ground floor and first floor areas
The Abel Heywood has been a cornerstone of Manchester’s Northern Quarter since 2015, when it was first transformed from a derelict, fire-damaged cotton warehouse into a thriving pub and boutique hotel. After nine years of successful operation, Hydes Brewery sought to refresh the venue to secure its future as a landmark destination in Manchester’s hospitality scene.
Challenge/Brief
Hydes Brewery’s Managing Director briefed MGI to transition the venue from its existing industrial-leaning aesthetic towards a modern-traditional public house design. The refurbishment needed to achieve three key objectives: honour the rich history of Hydes Brewery, celebrate Manchester’s iconic music heritage, and create a more welcoming atmosphere that would appeal to both existing loyal customers and new visitors.
The challenge was to modernise the space whilst respecting its character and maintaining operations in one of Manchester’s busiest hospitality districts.
Solution
MGI developed a comprehensive design strategy that balanced heritage authenticity with contemporary comfort. The approach centred on introducing traditional pub elements through feature wallpapers, Victorian tiling, and bright heritage colours to create a lighter, more inviting atmosphere.
The design concept specifically incorporated Manchester’s musical legacy and Hydes Brewery’s heritage through bespoke feature elements, including cast resin tables embedded with vinyl records from Manchester’s most famous bands and brewery beer clips, creating natural conversation points for customers.
Implementation
The refurbishment systematically replaced the venue’s industrial elements with period-appropriate alternatives. Scumble glazed ceilings and worn plaster effect walls gave way to fresh, bright surfaces, while all industrial lighting was replaced with antique brass period fittings.
Existing industrial shelving and back fittings were removed and replaced with timber back fittings and antique Victorian wall shelving. Rather than wholesale furniture replacement, MGI refurbished and reupholstered much of the existing furniture, complementing it with carefully selected new pieces.
Ground floor layout changes were minimal but strategic, removing face-to-face booths in favour of new horseshoe booths and mid-height fixed seating. The previously underutilised first floor was redesigned to encourage dining, while the ground floor remained focused on drinks and light bar snacks. Bi-fold doors were installed to create a flexible function room space for private parties and meetings.
Results
The transformation has received unanimously positive feedback from both Hydes Brewery and customers. The venue successfully balances its industrial heritage with a warmer, more traditional pub atmosphere that celebrates both local brewing history and Manchester’s musical legacy.
The strategic redesign of the first floor has created additional revenue opportunities through enhanced dining facilities, while the new function room provides flexible space for private events. The refurbishment has positioned The Abel Heywood to continue its success as a Northern Quarter landmark for years to come.
