The Castle, Spofforth

Project Overview

Location: Spofforth, North Yorkshire
Project Type: Pub transformation and hotel development
Scale: Complete renovation connecting existing pub to derelict barn via new-build link, creating 12 letting rooms, conference facilities, and enhanced dining spaces

Challenge/Brief

The Castle Inn required a comprehensive transformation to evolve from a traditional village local into a destination venue capable of attracting both community regulars and visiting guests. The client needed to connect the main stone-built pub to a derelict barn at the rear of the property, creating additional revenue streams through accommodation and enhanced dining facilities.

The building’s general state of disrepair presented significant structural challenges, whilst the addition of 12 ensuite letting rooms required complex drainage solutions across the expanded footprint.

Solution

MGI developed a design solution centred around a modern single-storey link building that would seamlessly connect the historic pub with the renovated barn structure. This approach preserved the character of the original building whilst creating a cohesive, multi-functional hospitality venue.

The design incorporated the existing pub and restaurant spaces alongside 12 new letting rooms, dedicated conference facilities, private dining areas, and an innovative internal garden complete with retractable roof system to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor dining.

Implementation

The project addressed the building’s structural issues whilst implementing comprehensive drainage infrastructure to support the new ensuite facilities. The 12-week programme required careful coordination to maintain operational continuity where possible and manage the complex integration of heritage and contemporary elements.

Key implementation aspects included restoring the traditional stone structure, constructing the modern linking element, converting the barn space, and installing the sophisticated retractable roof system for the internal garden area.

Results

The Castle was successfully transformed from a local village pub into a compelling destination venue that serves both the local community and the wider tourism market. The venue now operates as a comprehensive hospitality offering with enhanced dining facilities, quality accommodation, and flexible event spaces.

The 12 letting rooms provide a new revenue stream, whilst the conference facilities and private dining options have expanded the venue’s market reach. The internal garden with retractable roof has created a unique selling point that differentiates the venue within the local market, delivered within the demanding 12-week timeframe.
